Fall in Seattle: Must-Do’s in This Quirky City

Fall in Seattle: Must-Do’s in This Quirky City

I completely fell head over heels for autumn this year – pun very much intended to begin this read – and one of the main reasons was my epic few days in Washington State.

Washington, with its cascading mountains, breathtaking valleys, and evergreen forests, is an autumn-lover’s paradise. As soon as the calendar hits October, you’ll find yourself surrounded by a glowing tapestry of orange, red, and gold, accompanied by the satisfying crunch of fallen leaves beneath your feet. It’s the kind of place that makes your heart flutter and wraps you in an irresistible cosy warmth.

Today is the 1st of December, and as we move towards the crisp chill of winter and festive Christmas cheer, I’m not entirely ready to let go of autumn’s embrace. It’s undeniably the best season for photography, with dramatic lighting and vibrant hues creating breathtaking moments wherever you look.

Before bidding farewell to this glorious season, I want to reflect on one autumnal highlight in particular – my time in the quirky, dynamic city of Seattle.

Seattle is the crown jewel of Washington State, blending a futuristic vibe with a rich cultural history. The iconic Space Needle soars above the cityscape, a testament to its innovative spirit. I absolutely fell in love with Seattle, though my brief stay left me yearning for more.

Known as a gateway to destinations like British Columbia and Alaska, Seattle holds a special allure. While I’m sure I’ll return someday, nothing can quite match the tranquil charm of a crisp autumn day in this vibrant city.

Do you want to experience Seattle as I did? Keep reading for my must-do’s in this unforgettable place!

1. Start the Morning with a Boat Tour

There’s no better way to gather your first impressions of Seattle than from the water – quite fitting for a city whose name begins with “sea.”

While the city’s skyline is impressive from its bustling streets, seeing it from the water gives you a sense of its scale and beauty. A boat tour is a brilliant way to take in Seattle’s sights while learning fascinating tidbits about its history and culture.

During our tour, we were treated to a moody autumnal scene, with the Space Needle piercing through low-hanging clouds. Seattle’s rainy reputation held true, but I found the weather comforting, like being wrapped in a familiar Scottish embrace. To my surprise, we were lucky enough to spot Mount Rainier in the distance – a rare treat, as the colossal volcano is visible from Seattle only about 90 days a year.

Our guide shared quirky facts about the city, from Grey’s Anatomy trivia to the mini-earthquakes caused by Seahawks fans and Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour. Meanwhile, sea lions lounged on rocks, adding a playful charm to the already picturesque setting.

If you’re visiting Seattle, I highly recommend starting your day with a boat tour. It’s not only an engaging introduction but also a great way to see the city from a unique perspective.

Tip: I booked a combo ticket that included this tour and the Space Needle – highly recommended for saving time and money!

2. Explore Pike Place Market

After soaking in the skyline, head to the beating heart of Seattle: Pike Place Market. This historic market, established in 1907, is a sensory delight, brimming with fresh produce, artisan goods, and, of course, seafood.

The highlight is undoubtedly the famous fish-throwing spectacle at the fish market. Watching the staff chant sea shanties and toss fish with theatrical flair is oddly entertaining and uniquely Seattle.

Beyond the fishmongers, Pike Place is a haven for foodies. From creamy clam chowder to freshly baked pastries, there’s something to satisfy every craving. And when the autumn rain inevitably arrives, this vibrant indoor market offers a cosy retreat.

Before leaving, don’t miss the quirky (and slightly gross) Gum Wall – an alley entirely covered in chewed gum. It’s strange, it’s colourful, and it’s weirdly fascinating.

3. Stroll Around with a Starbucks in Hand

Seattle is the birthplace of Starbucks, and no visit is complete without stopping by the original store near Pike Place. Opened in 1971, this small, rustic café is more of a shrine to the coffee giant than your typical Starbucks.

While the queues can look daunting, they move surprisingly fast. Inside, you’ll find a charming blend of souvenirs and classic drinks, though it’s strictly takeaway due to the shop’s compact size.

If you’re seeking a more luxurious coffee experience, Seattle’s Starbucks Reserve Roastery offers a high-end twist, complete with espresso martinis for those feeling indulgent. Alternatively, the city boasts countless independent cafés, reflecting its reputation as America’s coffee capital.

Autumn in Seattle, with its crisp air and golden leaves, feels incomplete without a warm coffee in hand.

4. Ascend the Space Needle

Seattle’s skyline wouldn’t be the same without the Space Needle. Built for the 1962 World’s Fair, this iconic landmark remains a must-visit destination.

Rising 605 feet, the Space Needle offers unparalleled 360° views of the city, from the glittering waterfront to the rugged Olympic Mountains. On a clear day, you might even spot Mount Rainier in the distance.

For thrill-seekers, the glass-floored observation deck provides a unique perspective, allowing you to look straight down at the city below. If you’re feeling fancy, the bar on the upper level serves cocktails with a view, making your visit even more memorable.

Visiting during autumn adds an extra layer of charm, as the surrounding trees burst into vibrant hues of orange and red. It’s truly a sight to behold.

5. Take a Day Trip to Mount Rainier National Park

If you have time to venture beyond the city, a day trip to Mount Rainier National Park is an absolute must.

This park, one of the oldest in the U.S., is a haven for nature lovers, offering dramatic landscapes, scenic trails, and diverse wildlife. During my visit, I tackled the Skyline Trail in Paradise, a popular hiking route renowned for its breathtaking views and vibrant alpine meadows.

Though heavy fog obscured Mount Rainier itself, the autumn colours and misty atmosphere created a scene straight out of a Bob Ross painting. The highlight was Myrtle Falls, cascading into the foggy abyss below – a mesmerising and almost otherworldly sight.

Whether you’re an avid hiker or simply looking to reconnect with nature, Mount Rainier in autumn is an experience you won’t forget. You may even see a black bear or two if you are lucky – or to some unlucky. I only saw a rather wet chipmunk. Still an incredible day out nonetheless.
